Sir John Vans was born 1574 in Barnbarroch, Wigtownshire, Scotland and died June 1642 in County Donegal, Ulster, Ireland.

He married Margaret McDowell. She was the daughter of Uchtred McDowell and Margaret Kennedy.

Their children were:
